"Citizen Kane" Next FOLA Feature, March 1
Citizen Kane is a 1941 American drama film, directed by and starring Orson Welles. Many critics consider it the greatest film of all time, especially for its innovative cinematography, music and narrative structure. Citizen Kane was Welles's first feature film. The film was nominated for Academy Awards in nine categories; it won an Academy Award for Best Writing (Original Screenplay) by Herman Mankiewicz and Welles. It was released by RKO Pictures.
The story examines the life and legacy of Charles Foster Kane, played by Welles, a character based in part upon the American newspaper magnate William Randolph Hearst and Welles's own life. Upon its release, Hearst prohibited mention of the film in any of his newspapers. Kane's career in the publishing world is born of idealistic social service, but gradually evolves into a ruthless pursuit of power. Narrated principally through flashbacks, the story is revealed through the research of a newsreel reporter seeking to solve the mystery of the newspaper magnate's dying word: "Rosebud."
After his success in the theatre with his Mercury Players and his controversial 1938 radio broadcast of War of the Worlds, Welles was courted by Hollywood. He signed a contract with RKO Pictures in 1939. Unusual for an untried director, he was given the freedom to develop his own story and use his own cast and crew, and was given final cut privilege. "Citizen Kane" will be shown on March 1 at 7 PM in the auditorium. The movie is free; donations are appreciated. For information, call 228-7239.

'Lawrence of Arabia' Next FOLA Movie, Feb. 2
"Lawrence of Arabia" will be the next '1st Thursday' movie sponsored by FOLA (Friends of Ludlow Auditorium) on Thursday, Feb. 2 at 7 PM at the Ludlow Town Hall Auditorium. Considered one of the greatest film adventures ever made, the film tells the story of an inordinately complex man who has been labeled everything from hero, to charlatan, to sadist, Thomas Edward Lawrence as he blazed his way to glory in the Arabian desert, then sought anonymity as a common soldier under an assumed name. The story opens with the death of Lawrence in a motorcycle accident in Dorset at the age of 46, then flashbacks to recount his adventures: as a young intelligence officer in Cairo in 1916, he is given leave to investigate the progress of the Arab revolt against the Turks in World War I. In the desert, he organizes a guerrilla army and--for two years--leads the Arabs in harassing the Turks with desert raids, train-wrecking and camel attacks. Eventually, he leads his army northward and helps a British General destroy the power of the Ottoman Empire. The movie stars Peter O'Toole as Lawrence with Alec Guinness, Anthony Quinn, Omar Sharif, Jose Ferrer, Anthony Quayle, Claude Rains, and Arthur Kennedy. Pictured above in a scene from the film are Peter O'Toole and Omar Sharif. The movie is free; donations are appreciated. For information, call 228-7239.

'True Grit' Next Featured Ludlow Movie, Jan. 19
The film, "True Grit", will be the third movie in the 'Okemo Meets FOLA' series at the Ludlow Town Hall Auditorium on Thursday, January 19 at 7 PM. Following the murder of her father by hired hand Tom Chaney, 14-year-old farm girl Mattie Ross sets out to capture the killer. To aid her, she hires the toughest U.S. marshal she can find, a man with "true grit," Reuben J. "Rooster" Cogburn. Mattie insists on accompanying Cogburn, whose drinking, sloth, and generally reprobate character do not augment her faith in him. Against his wishes, she joins him in his trek into the Indian Nations in search of Chaney. They are joined by Texas Ranger LaBoeuf, who wants Chaney for his own purposes. The unlikely trio find danger and surprises on the journey, and each has his or her "grit" tested. Featured in the film are Jeff Bridges and Hailee Steinfeld (pictured above) along with Matt Damon and Josh Brolin. A Coen Brothers production, the film is an award-winning remake of the John Wayne classic of the same name. The movie is free to everyone; donations are appreciated. For information, call 228-7239. The final in the 'Okemo Meets FOLA' series will "The King's Speech" on Thursday, February 16 at 7PM at the auditorium.

Some Like It Hot Screened Jan. 12 in Ludlow
If you take a close look at the 6 "ladies" pictured above, you may note a somewhat disquieting fact - two of them don't really look like ladies. That's part of the plot of the January 19 film being shown at the Ludlow Town Hall Auditorium at 7 PM. The award-winning film, "Some Like It Hot", is part of the Okemo Meets FOLA movie series. The plot line provides laughter in a form that only a Billy Wilder movie can imagine. With a cast including Marilyn Monroe, Jack Lemmon, Tony Curtis, and Joe E. Brown, augmented by George Raft and Pat O'Brien, it's difficult to find a better comedy match. When two Chicago musicians, Joe and Jerry, witness the the St. Valentine's Day massacre, they want to get out of town and get away from the gangster responsible, Spats Colombo. They're desperate to get a gig out of town but the only job they know of is in an all-girl band heading to Florida. They show up at the train station as Josephine and Daphne, the replacement saxophone and bass players. They certainly enjoy being around the girls, especially Sugar Kane Kowalczyk who sings and plays the ukulele. Joe in particular sets out to woo her while Jerry/Daphne is wooed by a millionaire, Osgood Fielding III. Mayhem ensues as the two men try to keep they true identities hidden and Spats Colombo and his crew show up for a meeting with several other crime lords. The movie if free; donations are appreciated. For information, call 802-228-7239.
